A selection of works from the 2010 FASEM exhibition:
The 2010 exhibition was juried by Elizabeth Armstrong, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. She chose 49 artists out of 84 who competed. The entries show “a great range of styles and techniques,” Armstrong remarked, adding, “I love the variety.”
Nature in its many guises, the built environment, and human figures—some portraits—and animals, too, reflecting a variety of themes, were much in evidence, along with abstractions. The show consisted of 92 works.
Prize winners, presented with certificates at the opening reception, were Chris Johnson of La Crosse, WI, for Around the Block, first prize of $1000; Amanda Gullixson, Eagle Lake, WI, for Art Schools of America, the $500 second prize, while third prize of $250 was awarded to John Clay of Ostrander, MN, for Fish, Feathers, Peppers, Egg. Honorable Mentions went to Susan Horn of Hastings, MN; Beth Karon of Rochester, MN; Tim Armstrong, Decorah, IA; Mitchell Spencer, Eau Claire, WI; and John Whelan, La Crosse, WI.
